Common Teaching Standards

These Standards set out the minimum requirements for learning and teaching at CSU which all teaching academics are expected to meet.

There are many approaches to good university teaching. The practice and policy at CSU is to avoid being over prescriptive in teaching and learning policies and to create a framework in which academic staff are supported to exercise their own professional judgement, in consultation with colleagues, in determining how best to teach their students.
There are, however, some minimum standards which should inform university learning and teaching. Five of these have been selected as the CSU Common Teaching Standards. These Standards are set out below.

The CSU Common Teaching Standards reflect widely agreed understandings of essential elements in effective university teaching and learning; feedback from students and from external review, such as the recent; and learning and teaching priorities at CSU. These standards are minimum standards. They form a basis on which to build high quality teaching and to the achievement of CSU’s priorities for learning and teaching such as successful participation; education for professional practice; and flexible learning.

The five CSU Common Teaching Standards are:

(1) Currency: currency is demonstrated by the currency of content of subject materials AND by the staff member meeting research,
creative or professional activity performance criteria.
(2) Responsiveness to students: responsiveness is demonstrated by the quality of feedback on assessment, meeting timelines for
assignment turn around, and adherence to CSU protocols for online and student contact availability.
(3) Timeliness: meeting timelines for learning materials preparation and for assessment and grading.
(4) Assessment: assessment practices should demonstrate alignment with learning outcomes for the subject AND with course based
patterns of assessment.
(5) Subject–Course Linkages: the subject coordinator is expected to participate in course based curriculum development and planning
and to have aligned the subject to support these.
